3 Commonest Faulty Diet Habits to check for achieving Healthy Daily Nutrition

Healthy eating involves not only eating the right food, but also eating it the right way. While there is ample info about the first aspect on the Net, the other one often gets neglected a lot, leaving all that nutritious food and fitness efforts in vain. So today we take a look at the mistakes most people commit in the ‘how’ aspect of diet, in spite of doing right of ‘what’, as told by Ayurveda.

Habit no.1

Adhyashan, or “should I have some more after an hour?”

What it means?

Adyashan refers to repeat-eating within three hours from a meal.

What does it cause?

Our stomach is a muscular bag that keeps milling its contents, mixing them with the hydrochloric acid it secretes, to cause digestion. It has an inlet and an outlet, each guarded by a sphincter (muscular valve) that allows only one-way passage of food. Now it happens so, that when the stomach gets filled and distended by a good meal, it starts the milling process and signals the brain, who sets the outlet sphincter to open at a timing of around 3 hours from then, which is when the food has been sufficiently milled to enter the next stage of digestion. Imagine what would happen if you add some unmilled new food to the half-churned gravy in the meantime? The result is, obviously, improperly churned half-digested output, which sets off a chain reaction of tummy troubles at each subsequent stage of digestion, right from burping/bloating to constipation and piles.

How to check it –

Space it out at least three hours between two food servings.

Habit no.2

Vishamaashan, or “Watch out the rhythm!”

What does it mean?

Vishamaashan refers to inconsistencies in the timings and quantities of meals.

What does it cause?

In case you still don’t know, your body’s biological clock is not only an Ayurvedic concept, but a realtime function of the brain verified by modern science. Like any clock, it runs best at a uniform rhythm, aligned to the surrounding natural cycle. So if your system is tuned to digest, say, xyz amount of food per cycle of about 4 to 8 hours (depending on your age), you should go only for that much, no less and no more. Same stands true for the timing.

How to check it –

An evenly spaced meal schedule that is best aligned with the Dosha clock is the ideal plan in terms of Ayurveda. Though Ayurveda never gives a ‘one-size-fits-all’ prescription for anything, a somewhat generalized diet plan can be summarized as follows –

Breakfast:

on waking up early in the morning.

light on proteins but high on minerals and calories.

Lunch:

around noon

High on proteins and fats.

Evening snack:

About sunset

Fibrous low calorie food with more antioxidants and adaptogens.

Dinner:

light if early, and medium-to-heavy in proteins, if at late night. Calories, however, should ideally be low in dinner.

Habit no.3

Samaashan, or “the wrong combo”.

What does it mean?

Samaashan means eating both recommended and non-recommended food during the diet period. So if you think that the doctor has asked me to eat unpolished rice and I’m having it for the meals already, so I can sneak in on a burger for snack, you are ruining the doctor’s and your own efforts.

What does it cause?

Any and everything, depending on what wrong combination you eat.

How to check it –

Dietary advice, whether Ayurvedic or modern, is always comprehensive, and one should not deviate from it without the consultant’s advice.
